Mullen Proves to be the Better Mustang

For the varsity 'Stangs, game-1 set the tone for the night.  Senior Lydia Gammon, the Mullen libero, was the epitome of hustle all night and helped set the energetic tone for the team.  Senior Carmela Carbone was all over the court and was a force around the net on both offense and defense.  Senior Devon Moore was her usual steady-self with well placed, deadly serves, and her presence on net gave Mullen a double-threat that would prove too much for CA.  

Early on in the first game it was a back-and-forth affair with both teams playing with a lot of energy and alternating points .  Both teams were tied at nine when Mullen finally took off.  Mullen would score the next 5-points and would never look back.  CA proved to be stubborn and tried to hang around with a late surge, but Mullen would slowly widen their lead to take game-1, 25 - 16.

The next two games would start out in similar fashion.  In game-2 CA jumped out to a 5-1 lead and appeared to have the upper hand.  The Mullen girls would have none of it, but they were in for a fight nonetheless.  They battled back to tie the game at 7 and again at 9, and then CA went on a run scoring the next four points.  Mullen would, again, battle back to tie it at 16, and from there, it was a back-and-forth affair to the finish.  To tie it at 18, Moore hit a thunderous kill that was unreturnable.  To put Mullen ahead at 22, Carbone used the slight-of-hand move to drop a shot where no one was standing.  CA was able to tie the score at 22-apiece, but Mullen responded with three-straight points to win the game 25 - 22.           

In the third and final game, again, CA jumped out to a 3-1 and then a 5-3 lead trying hard to capture the momentum.  However, Mullen tied the score at 5 and then proceeded to score the next twelve out of thirteen points to take a 17-6 advantage.  CA, again, would not capitulate to the insurmountable deficit and tried a comeback, but it was too much of a task, and Mullen prevailed 25 - 16 and earned a sweep of their neighborhood counterpart, 3 - 0.

Next up for the Mullen varsity volleyball team is the Glenwood Demon Invitational in Glenwood Springs this Friday and Saturday.
