KEYS TO THE NEW CAR Mullen Announces New Flag Football Coach
New things - Aren’t they awesome! For instance, getting that brand new car with its reflective paint and new car smell, or the maintenance-free security of a brand-spanking new house with fresh paint on the walls and perfect carpet and hardwood, or how about the look of a new suit or evening gown and the confidence boost it gives its wearer as everyone sneaks a peak at what real style looks like. We are drawn to the anticipation of newness. The mystery of what lies in wait, the learning curve of mastering the unknown, the excitement of the uniqueness of being one of the first to parade the new look are all things that draw us to want the latest thing. It is human nature or, perhaps, today’s conditioned culture, not sure which. Regardless, new is nice. In that light, Mullen Athletics has something new, and it is ecstatic to show it off. A new athletic program is unveiling its inaugural season this fall, and the expected excitement with the novelty of the program is right up there with all new things. Mullen will field its first girls’ flag football team this fall as a charter member of CHSAA’s newest sanctioned sport. With that addition comes inherent needs, and the first priority is naming the right coach to get this new program thriving and banner-worthy.
The Mullen Athletic Department is pleased to announce Mitch Hulse as the new head coach of the girls’ flag football program. Coach Hulse is not new to Mullen but, in fact, is a member of Mullen’s Sports Performance Department who has transitioned into a teaching position as a member of the Wellness Department. That credential alone brings with it a knowledge of Mullen’s core values and an understanding of its institutional culture. He also brings experience. Where does one go to find an experienced flag football coach? The sport is not mainstream. It just so happens that Coach Hulse is a five-time collegiate intramural flag football champion at two separate universities. He was also a collegiate women’s assistant cross-country coach as well as a baseball club coach. Then, there is the knowledge that comes with his Exercise Science degree from Western Oregon and his advanced degree in Sports and Human Performance from Delta State University to go along with his experience of working with athletes in movement and sports performance that will only benefit the girls on the team.
Coach had this to say upon his appointment as head coach of the girls’ flag football program. “Stepping into the role of head coach for Mullen High School's inaugural girls' flag football program is both an honor and a thrilling challenge. I am excited to be part of a pioneering effort that aims to empower young women through sport and provide them with opportunities to excel both on and off the field. This program represents more than just athletic development. It is about creating a culture built on confidence, teamwork, and a sense of belonging among our student-athletes. With the support of the athletic department, I am confident that we will build a program that not only competes on the field but inspires future generations of female football players,” No one really knows what to expect as the inaugural season unfolds, but it is apparent that the girls have the right coach for the job. There is no doubt that he will properly know how to operate and care for that fancy new car, that he will convert that beautiful new house into an awesome home, and that he will fully and humbly understand that the clothes don’t make the man; the man makes the clothes. Go Stangs!!!
NOTE: There is a program meeting set for Tuesday, June 25th in the Rilko Event Center on the Mullen Campus at 5:00 PM. All players, prospective players, and their parents are invited and urged to attend. In this meeting, Coach will begin to lay out the parameters of the program and have details available on summer workouts (OTAs), fall practices and schedules, coaching philosophies, and expectations. It will also be a time for all to ask questions. Please make every effort to be there and help launch this new sport.
