Innovation, Excellence, and Teamwork: Mullen High School’s Robotics Team Shines on the World Stage

by Patrick Motter, Director of Strategic Communication & Marketing
Mullen High School’s robotics team, MECH (Mullen Engineering and Coding Hub), is making headlines locally and globally. As one of the world’s top-performing private Catholic high school robotics teams, MECH's 2024–2025 season has been nothing short of extraordinary.

A Season of Innovation and Victory

MECH secured an impressive world ranking of 139th out of nearly 8,000 teams in this year’s FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC). Their remarkable season was crowned by a return to the 2025 FTC World Championship in Houston, Texas — a distinction that only the most elite teams achieve.

Their path to Worlds was paved with major victories, including the Inspire Award at the Colorado State Championship. This is the highest honor in FTC, recognizing excellence in engineering, creativity, and team dynamics — and it sealed their place among the best of the best.

Competing with the World's Best

MECH competed in the Edison Division at the World Championship, finishing 14th out of 64 teams — placing them in the top 1.8% of robotics teams worldwide. Team MECH joined forces with partners from Pennsylvania and Shanghai, exemplifying technical skill, global collaboration, and teamwork.

Their innovative robot, built with a coaxial lift and arm system, earned 2nd Place for the Innovate Award, recognizing standout design and engineering. MECH also achieved the highest global score in the ladder-climbing task, a testament to their ingenuity and precision.

The Heart of MECH: Student Voices

What makes MECH truly special goes beyond the awards — the experience of being part of a community that fosters growth, creativity, and passion for STEM.
  • “Being on the robotics team at Mullen allows me to work with like-minded individuals passionate about engineering and problem-solving,” said JT Reynolds ‘26.
  • “As a senior, being able to compete with my team one last time excites me most about going to the FIRST World Championship for the second time!”  Thanh-Tam Nguyen ‘25
“MECH has become a home away from home. It’s about learning, growing, and building a supportive community,” Addison Geffre ‘25

Standing Out Among the Best

MECH’s achievements are even more impressive than those of other Catholic high school teams. Teams like Notre Dame High School’s RoboKnights (ranked 163rd globally) and even the legendary Team 254 “The Cheesy Poofs” from Bellarmine College Preparatory, with their storied championship history, are well-respected peers. Yet MECH’s meteoric rise and consistent excellence position them as rising stars in competitive robotics.

An Invitation to Join the Future

At Mullen High School, MECH represents more than just robotics — it embodies the spirit of innovation, the joy of learning, and the power of community. The team’s journey is a powerful example of what students can achieve with the proper support, passion, and perseverance.
