Weekly Roundup: 3/11 - 3/16

On Thursday, Friday, and Saturday of last week, everyone succumbed to the mighty hand of Mother Nature.  Baseball fell victim to the wet weather on Wednesday, and for the next three days, all extracurricular activity was canceled including Mullen’s hosting of the Centennial League’s JV track meet on Friday.  The slow, tedious work of getting all events rescheduled ensued even before the storm hit with only one cancellation to date, tennis’ invitation to Steamboat Springs for a tournament.  The rest have all found homes in the weeks and months to come.

After an impressive opening win against Prairie View, Mullen hosted Columbine in De La Salle Stadium on Monday, March 11th.  Columbine proved too much for the Mustangs and came away with a 9-3 win over the Mustangs.  Freshman Zadie Mills, junior Soren Brear, and senior Brody Meade paced the Mustangs with a goal apiece.  Next up for the Mustangs is at Kent Denver on Monday, March 18 at 4:00.

Last week girls’ lacrosse played back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday.  On Monday they traveled to Northfield and fell to the Nighthawks 20-12.  The Mustangs were led by senior Hannah Aquino’s 7 goals.  On Tuesday they hosted Chatfield and came up short in a close contest, 15-10.  Sophomore Charlize Smith, and seniors Stella Geffre, Dri Eckman, and Hannah Aquino led the Mullen attack with 2-goals apiece.   The Mustangs host Roaring Fork Schools on Tuesday.

The Mullen girls’ golf team beat the weather and most of the Centennial League.  In their opening match of the season on Wednesday, the Mustangs finished in 2nd-Place behind a very strong Cherry Creek team.  Behind Creek’s 295, Mullen finished with a 338-team score.  The Mustangs were led by sophomore Tatum Platt’s 70 followed by junior Caitlyn Chin’s 73, sophomore Clara Jeon’s 74, senior Caroline Ryan’s 75, and junior Riley Sullivan’s 78. 

The girls are off this week and next due to everyone’s spring breaks and will not see action until April 2nd when they host the League at Foothills Golf Course.

Girls’ soccer traveled to always tough Northfield High School to take on the Nighthawks last Wednesday night.  In a hard-fought contest, Mullen fell short 2-1 against the home team.  Next up for the Mustangs is at Windsor on Tuesday, March 19.

Mullen’s swimmers and divers were not going to let Mother Nature get the best of them.  With an eye on the forecast, the meet at Smoky Hill was moved up a day to Wednesday to avoid the winter beatdown.  In this early season, the boys are off to a tremendous start with 9-qualifying times out of 16 events.  Due to Cherry Creek School District’s spring break this week and Mullen and Arapahoe’s next week, the boys are off until April 4th when they travel to Grandview.

Tennis kicked off their season last Monday with a road trip to Ralston Valley High School and fell to the RV Mustangs 6-1.  Mullen’s #2-Doubles team of Clara Dailey and Maisie McMorrow was the sole winner for Mullen winning their match 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.  The girls bounced back the next day in true Mullen fashion by defeating Evergreen High School 7-0 at Pinehurst Country Club.  The singles lineup was led by #1-Singles player, Lilly Evans, who won easily 6-0, 6-0.  #2-Singles, Claire Lenich, bettered her opponent 6-2,6-2, and Anna Lawrence at 3-Singles won 6-1, 6-4.  Crace Brouillette and Maise McMorrow at 1-Doubles won 6-1, 6-2; at 2-Doubles, Clara Dailey and Avery Walters coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win; at 3-Dubs, Grace Jeffers and Charlotte Morse won 6-3, 6-0; and Ali Croci and Alexa Valdez made it a sweep with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Next up for these ‘netters’ is Tuesday, March 19 against Heritage at Pinehurst.

In boys volleyball action last week, the Mustangs found themselves on the road.  On Tuesday, they faced off against Highlands Ranch and fell to the Hawks 3-0.  The Mustangs were led by senior Jaycee Campos and sophomore D. Ramirez’s 4-kils apiece.  The following night they headed over to D’Evelyn and lost by the same margin, 3-0.  Junior Ben Rogers led the attack with 6-kills against the Jaguars.  Next up for the Mustangs is Kennedy High School on Monday, March 18.
