Zingler Leads Mullen Golf to a Top Five Finish at State

by Hank Hooper, Associate Athletic Director
Mullen’s girls’ golf team locked up a solid spring season with a steady showing at the 4A State Golf Championships at Thorncreek Golf Course in Thornton, Colorado.  Mullen finished 4th in a field of fifteen teams with a first-round score of 250 and followed that up with a second-day total of 251.  This is the third straight top five finish at State for the Mullen’s girls’ golf team.
“This was the deepest field that I have ever seen," said head coach Kate Walker.  “Erie, the defending State Championship team, was unbeatable with their top players.  However, 6 teams had a chance at 2nd place going into the second day of state.  Durango and Discovery Canyon edged us out the second day, and we finished 4th in the team race, which is impressive given the depth of the field.”

Mullen was led by senior and All-State selection Kaitlin Zingler’s 3rd-Place finish, her third-straight top ten finish at State.  She was followed by sophomores Riley Sullivan, who shot a career high 86 on day two, Sammy Yates, and Jane Gray.  The sophomore trio finished among the 4A field of 84 golfers at 34th, 36th, and 49th, respectively.

“Overall, our team had a very successful season,” Coach Walker added.  “We finished 2nd in the Centennial League standings as the only 4A team, and we won our 3rd consecutive Regional Tournament.  Although Kaitlin graduated, our team was filled with sophomores, so the future looks bright for Mullen Girls Golf!”
